Sea of Death

2009

Three ships – Wilhelm Gustloff, Steuben and Goya – lie at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, ghosts from a past that many people have tried hard to forget. Together they bear witness of a gigantic tragedy, in terms of human suffering many times worse than the Titanic. ”Sea of Death” is a documentary that takes the viewer on a journey 80 metres down to the seafloor where we can see a frozen moment in the most tragic period in European history. Almost 20 000 German refugees lost their lives when the three ships were torpedoed in 1945, only a few hundred survived and sixty years later there are very few left who are willing and able to recall this tragic event.
